     The Christmas Pickle Story

    The Christmas pickle is a Christmas tradition in the United States. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree, with the finder receiving either a reward or good fortune for the following year. There are a number of different origin stories attributed to the tradition.

    The origin of the Christmas pickle may have been developed for marketing purposes. In the early 1890’s Woolworths was the first company to import glass Christmas tree decorations from Germany into the United States, and glass blown decorative vegetables were imported from France starting in 1892.

    Berrian Springs Michigan bills itself as the undesputed Christmas Pickle capital of the world. Their account of the origin of the Christmas Pickle from when two boys on their way home from boarding school for the Christmas holiday crossed a mean innkeeper who trapped them in a pickle barrel. They were freed when St. Nick tapped on the barrel with his staff.  The town celebrates the miraculous escape by holding a Christmas Pickle Festival every year in early December with a parade led by the Grand Dillmeister. Instead of throwing candy or beads, he handed out fresh pickles. Christmaspickle

    There are other legends about the Christmas Pickle such as a Bavarian born emigrant while serving the South during the civil war became ill after being imprisoned in Georgia and convinced  the guard just before he was about to die to give him a pickle. The pickle helped him to miraculously recover. healed him  which you may or may not choose to believe. What really matters is traditions like these helps build memories and bring people together and that my friends is the true meaning of Christmas!
